Photojournalist and filmmaker born in the last century, he is now living in Zürich.
Photo-stories about Nicaragua and Beirut, the deforestation on Borneo and feuding tribes in northern Cambodia. Books about the revolution in Nicaragua, the life of child prostitutes in the Philippines, the Yakuza (the Japanese Mafia) and numerous other publications in the form of picture books.
For years a member of the photo-agency Magnum. His photos have appeared in magazines including Life Magazine, National Geographic, Stern, Geo, Sunday Times Magazine, The Independent Magazine, and Time.
In 1988 on travelling through West Africa he came for the first time into contact with the mysterious power of voodoo and met one of Africa’s top voodoo priests.
Four years later he produced a photo-story about voodoo in Africa for Geo magazine. This led to regular trips to Benin and to a continual documentation of events with a film camera. Beside the series of photos and an exhibition, there arose at the same time an experimental documentary film ‘Voodoo – Mounted by the Gods’ in co-operation with Wim Wenders.
